What is a Spiritual Disorder?
To understand my model, it helps to first accept the notion that human beings are not just physical flesh. There is a subtle energy layer of the human identity that is not always acknowledged by our culture. We can also call that energy “spirit.” So disorders of the energy body can be called spiritual disorders.
The presence of spiritual energy displays as an experience of “ownership” over a space, which includes the ability to enjoy and make change in a space. When a person is spiritual healthy then, they enjoy being in their own body, and can direct changes for that body. There is a sovereignty of spirit which then underlies physical immune system wellness.
The relationship of abuse is where the energy of one person is overlapping on the space of another. For there to be space available for an oppressor to “own” within that other person, the oppressed’s own energy has to be driven out.
To generalize, I will say “older person” and “younger person” to represent assailant and target. Its usually that way, but not always. The older person must defeat the younger person’s own energy, to maintain the trespassing pseudo-ownership of the younger person’s space. This is accomplished by delivering pain, which is avoided when the younger one hands over the driver’s seat of their own body. The disease convinces both people that virtue, for the younger one, is manifest slavery to the older. The older one “is supposed to” direct, for his/her own comfort or enjoyment, the younger person’s actions, behavior or expressions.
So visualize that energy overlap. The younger one, once the disease is established, sets their own energy aside, outside themselves. This is the resignation, once they believe the lies of the disease. That they deserve to be hurt, that their virtue and worth do not lie in the center of their being, but are foreign, externally defined. They are valuable if useful to another person.
Now imagine that within the trespasser's energy space, if not as a presence, at least as a template, there exists a non-human being or mechanism. That is a spiritual virus.
Sexual assault or domination is only one way that abusers own the space of another person. There are many strains of spiritual disease. All of the energy/identity overlaps are held in place by a serious of routine painful assaults, of one kind or another.
Whew. That's a lot of scary images.
Now, the image of health is where each person utterly owns their own energy, each person is a shining ball of intact energy of creative power etc. No overlaps. Bonds of alliance, yes. But dominations, no. The True Self is manifest.
Now we get to the good part. There is an immune system. This state of wellness for everybody is maintained in a community atmosphere of boundaries set and healthy balances between privacy and togetherness.
By ground-rule and floorplan, each person is empowered to own their own selves, and none other. Being free to have an out, to never be cornered by family members or others who could dominate a person, is mobility in the context of options: liberty.
The liberty to make use of options, all those outs, is (or will be) constitutionally protected liberty to privacy, peer assembly, etc. This is the immune system. Essentially, it is delivered by a congruency in church (community) and state (clear concepts of healthy boundaries, based on human rights.)
There is tremendous unrealized potential in the U.S. Constitution and in particular Bill of Rights.
I think sexual abuse is solved best when it is viewed as a subset of a larger problem, and that is the spiritual illness that displays as one person overlapping upon another person, with painful events as the “glue” that holds the unnatural dynamic together. Once the glue is there, the painful events may no longer display at all. Once the false identity has been installed, the disease has been successful. Painful events are or were the mechanisms of contagion.
There is another aspect of this whole set of diseases, and that is memory loss, or we could call it distortions of consciousness. More precisely: acquired unconsciousness, selective unconsciousness. There is a complex but comprehensible series of events that causes the repression of awareness. This acquired unconsciousness can spread to other aspects of life and be the fundamental template for citizen acceptance of bad government, bad economy, bad media and corrosive so-called arts. I am referring here to violence in film or games that persistently desensitizes a person to violence.
The value of a model is the results it gives. This model needs to be tested. But my goal here is to transmit the model as best I can.
